Statement on the 17th foundation day Celebration

Theme:  Making a child beloved, the right thing to do

First of all we are very glad and grateful in Batang Pinangga for all the support that has come our way, from near and far, from our sponsors and donors who have kept their commitment and trust, from friends we know, from families who came to visit, from caring individuals, from people we know, from people we do not know. There are many.

There is a lot to say about what we do: sharing, giving, caring for the least fortunate, especially the children, an expression of our social responsibility; we are motivated by our faith, a moral obligation to help others.

Whatever the reason, we come to help because we know that it is the right thing to do. And we are happy doing it.

So now we have 17 years of milestones.

There were children who lived with us for ten years, and finally able to return home.

We have new children who may need long term care. May we find them suitable foster homes. Many children still need help.

The situation of the poor children in the country is not changing yet for the better.

Many of them we see on the streets. In the rural communities, children of the poor work in the farmland for their food, and many missed school. In the streets of Cebu City, those who were displaced by calamities and disasters remain in shanties, their children roam the streets begging for food.

An eight-year old child of a Filipino-American family asked his father, as they were passing by the roadside in the rural community of sugar workers, seeing small houses, where children were running barefoot with worn-out clothes, “Dad, why are they so poor”?

It hits us hard. That we are a country of poor people.

We will ask ourselves again that question, “why are we poor?”  If we have the answer, then the solution is in our hands.  We are responsible, and by God, let us help this country!

All of those engaged with the work of Batang Pinangga, from the Board of Trustees to all the staff, partners, volunteers, sponsors and friends and their families, we have opted to help the abandoned, neglected and abused children.

It is not an easy answer, too.

But we know it is the right thing to do.

And especially that we are happy doing it.

May we always be blessed!

Happy 17th year!
